Gilbert graduated from the University of Puerto Rico in 1983 with a degree in secondary education majoring in visual arts, being trained by some of the most recognized artists in Puerto Rico, such as Susan Smith in drawing and printmaking (lithography, linoleum, tip dry, etc..), John Balossi in sculpture and commercial art, painting Lope Max Diaz, Rafael Rivera Garcia in drawing and painting (mural), María Emilia Somoza in printmaking and art education, Edwin Mauras in design for art teachers, Bob Robinson on ceramics and Luis Hernandez Cruz in painting and screen printing, among others. He has participated in several competitions and art exhibitions in Puerto Rico and New York University Competition (UPR Rio Piedras), Ateneo, Chase Manhattan, Biblioteca José M. Lazarus (UPR Rio Piedras) Barrett Art Center, New York. He currently works as a graphic designer in New York and continues his work as an artist exploring new possibilities in their work in sculpture ceramics.
